Mathematical Consultant — Pharmacometrics Engine
About AI4Pharma
AI4Pharma is a computational drug development startup founded by a UCSF researcher in AI and pharmacometrics. We are building GPU-accelerated infrastructure to modernize how drugs are modeled and dosed. Our flagship product, PharmFast, is a GPU-accelerated execution engine for nonlinear mixed-effects (NLME) pharmacometric models — designed to be dramatically faster than current industry-standard tools like NONMEM. We are affiliated with NVIDIA Inception.
About the Role
We are looking for a part-time mathematical consultant based in Egypt to serve as the mathematical core of our PharmFast estimation engine. This is a research and specification role — not a software engineering role. You will not be asked to write production code. Your deliverables are mathematical derivations, algorithm specifications, pseudocode, and validation criteria that our engineering team then implements.
You will work directly with the founder — a pharmacometrics researcher at UCSF — and a junior implementation engineer. You will be a named co-author on methodology papers we plan to submit to peer-reviewed journals including CPT: Pharmacometrics and Systems Pharmacology within the next 12 months.
This role is ideal for a mathematician or mathematical statistician at an Egyptian university who wants to apply their expertise to a real-world computational drug development problem and build an international research and industry profile in the process.
What You Will Do
- Formulate the likelihood functions underlying nonlinear mixed-effects PK/PD models
- Derive gradient and Hessian expressions required for numerical optimization of these likelihoods
- Write formal mathematical specifications and pseudocode for estimation algorithms including FOCEI and SAEM
- Review and validate all mathematical output for correctness before engineering implementation begins
- Advise on numerical stability, convergence conditions, model identifiability, and error propagation
- Contribute to the mathematical methods sections of co-authored research papers
- Serve as the mathematical review layer between AI-generated specifications and final engineering implementation
What We Are Looking For
Required:
- PhD in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics
- Deep expertise in likelihood-based parameter estimation — you have maximized non-closed-form likelihood functions in your research
- Experience with Bayesian inference and MCMC methods (Metropolis-Hastings, Gibbs sampling, or equivalent)
- Experience with nonlinear optimization for statistical estimation problems
- Experience working with censored, sparse, or incomplete data
- Strong formal mathematical writing — you produce rigorous, publication-quality derivations
- Based in Egypt — any city, fully remote
Strongly Preferred:
- Published research in statistical inference, parameter estimation, survival analysis, or reliability modeling
- Familiarity with expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms or stochastic approximation methods
- Ability to communicate complex mathematical concepts clearly to a non-pure-mathematician domain expert
- Experience co-authoring peer-reviewed papers in applied mathematics or statistics
Not Required:
- Coding or software engineering skills
- Prior pharmacometrics or pharmaceutical experience — we will fully onboard you on the domain
- Full-time availability
What We Offer
- Fully remote, async-friendly part-time engagement — 10 hours per week on your own schedule
- Named co-authorship on peer-reviewed methodology papers submitted to international pharmacometrics journals
- Direct collaboration with a UCSF-based pharmacometrics researcher and AI scientist
- Exposure to GPU-accelerated scientific computing and computational drug development — a rapidly growing field
- Part-time honorarium commensurate with Egyptian academic consulting rates, with a clear path to increased compensation as the company raises funding
- NVIDIA Inception affiliation — access to a growing network of GPU computing and life sciences industry connections
How to Apply
Please send your resume to contact@ai4pharma.org.
AI4Pharma is an equal opportunity employer. We actively encourage applications from mathematicians and mathematical statisticians at Egyptian universities at all career stages — from assistant lecturers to full professors. What matters is your mathematical depth and your willingness to engage with a novel applied problem.
